Foreign animal disease reporting

Sudden high mortality in a flock with cyanotic combs and neurologic signs is a reportable foreign animal disease suspicion. Stop, secure the premises, and call the state veterinarian.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza and virulent Newcastle disease are reportable in the United States. The clinician's duty is recognition and notification, not diagnosis; sample collection and confirmatory testing are directed by state and federal animal health officials. On suspicion, halt movement of birds, people, equipment, and vehicles, document contacts, and implement strict biosecurity including dedicated boots and outerwear. Notify the state animal health official and the USDA area veterinarian in charge immediately. Understand your responsibilities under accreditation: reportable disease lists, movement permits, and interstate certificates of veterinary inspection are examinable material and daily practice reality.
