Leptospirosis is zoonotic and shed in urine. Barrier precautions for urine contact and disinfection are the core protective measures; shedding decreases with appropriate antibiotics but precautions continue during treatment. An unvaccinated dog exposed to a confirmed rabid animal should be euthanized; if declined, immediate vaccination with a 4-month strict quarantine applies. The 45-day observation is for currently vaccinated dogs, and 10-day observation applies to dogs that bite humans.
